Godparent Information

Godparents need to be an example for their godchild of how to live a full sacramental life.

Therefore, the Church requires the following of godparents:

  • To be at least 16 years old.
  • To have received the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist).
  • If the godparents are married, they need to be married in the Catholic Church.
  • To participate regularly at Sunday Mass and holy days of obligation.

Non-Catholic Christians may be on the record as “Christian witnesses” so long as they will support the parents in raising the child in the Catholic faith and there is at least one Catholic sacramental godparent.

Process

  • Register the parents and godparents online.
  • At least one parent meets with Fr. Daniel (or a designated deacon) and receives a Baptism Information Form.
  • Fill out the Baptism Information Form and attach copies of the following certificates:
  • The child's birth certificate
  • The Baptism and Confirmation certificates of the godparents
  • The sacramental marriage certificate of the godparents (if applicable)
  • Letter of permission from the home parish (if applicable)
  • The parents and godparents attend the Baptism Experience and turn in the paperwork.

If you are expecting a baby in the next few months, you may begin the registration process and attend the Baptism Experience before the baby is born.
