Deacon Phil Joerger
At Our Lady of the Assumption we are happy to assist parents to have their children baptized into Jesus Christ and to welcome them as members of the Catholic Church. Most children are baptized in their first year of life, but some families delay baptism for good reason. Children under 7 years of age may be baptized at the request of their parents. Children over 7 years of age must agree to be baptized and follow a process adapted from the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. We expect the parent(s) are active Catholics committed to raising their children in the Catholic faith.
Parents are expect to be registered members of Our Lady of the Assumption, or reside within the parish boundaries. Parents residing in other parishes will be asked to obtain a letter of permission from their parish pastor to baptize at Our Lady of the Assumption.
One and generally two godparents assist the parents not only at the Baptism, but throughout the child’s life. Canon Law requires one godparent who is a confirmed, practicing Catholic over 16 years old. If a godparent is married, they need to be married in the Catholic Church. Also, they are expected to attend Sunday Mass regularly. The godparents’ role is to model and mentor the child and to support the parents in raising their child in the Catholic faith. Some families wish to have more than two godparents. Any and all Catholic friends and family may be unofficial godparents. Non-Catholic Christians may be on the record as “Christian witnesses” so long as they will support the parents in raising the child in the Roman Catholic faith.
Typically, parents contact the parish at (805) 642-7966 to begin the registration process and schedule an interview appointment. At this meeting information, including the child’s birth certificate, will be obtained. Available dates for pre-baptismal classes and baptism will be discussed at this time. Requests for a particular priest or deacon or for special times will be considered for good reasons. Families with children over 4 years old may be asked to complete a workbook with the child.
Many families attend class during the month of the baptism. However, if you are expecting a baby in the next few months, you may begin the registration process and attend class before the baby is born.
Both the parents and the godparents are expected to attend a pre-baptismal class. Godparents who live in another locale may attend class in their own parish.
There are two classes offered each month. One is held on the first Saturday of each month from 9:30 to 11:00 A.M. in the Parish Center Santa Cruz Room. The other is held on the Second Sunday of each month from 9:15 to 10:45 A.M. in the Parish House.
Baptisms are celebrated on the second and third Sundays of the month at 2:00 P.M. in the Church.
Dates are changed occasionally, so please call the parish office to verify them.
